It may be of use to explain exactly why and how slavery was a salient issue in the minds of the people at the time, as it cannot be given as a proper "cause of war" when the North still had slave-holding states, and the North by no means suddenly banded together and attacked the South to "free slaves" as has been oft assumed (but not in this article). The South seceeded and was then attacked, and not at all for the purpose of freeing slaves, but rather preventing a split in the union.

The Civil War is such an enormously huge topic, with several pages' attention in paper encyclopedias, that to do the often citied slavery issue justice warrants further explanation and research, as it is an issue of common misconception and considerable modern myth.
