Copyright Infringement?

I'd like to add a picture of the car form each the three versions (1967, 1993, 1997) as I'm not very good at writing descriptions, but I don't know how to check the copyright on the images.--pabter 18:08, Jan 20, 2005 (UTC)

I don't think the creators are going to sue Wikipedia. I think the pictures are fair use. But the creator of the series lives in America, so we can always ask him if you're worried. Uncle Ed 16:11, 22 October 2005 (UTC)

"Mach Go"

I removed the bit at the start which identified it as the Mach Go, because "Go" just means "Five". So it's still "Mach Five". I mean, if a Spanish version called it the "Mach Cinco", I don't think that'd be noteworthy either, so why bother noting this? It's also confusing because "Go" could be construed as the English word "Go", making the meaning of the name appear different, but it isn't. - furrykef (Talk at me) 05:43, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

The car's name in English is definitely the "Mach Five". It connotes a very speedy vehicle (as if it were capable of going 5 times the speed of sound). The "Go Go Go" part is a bilingual pun. "Go" in Japanese is 5, of course, but the show's creators were literate in English. The phrase go go go is just what someone would say to encourage a competitor to start moving: "Go, go, go!"

There are other puns involved. The name of the production company uses "co" (meaning Co. short for "company") with a double meaning. I'll go look this up, because I only half remember it now, but I read about it yesterday. Uncle Ed 16:16, 22 October 2005 (UTC)

In the case of Go Mifune/Speed Racer's car, "go" means more than just five. I assume most of you are aware of the pun, but there's more to it. In the original Japanese version, the car's name is written as "マッハ号" (mahha gou). Now, this particular kanji for "go" is a suffix used as part of the names of ships, or other "special vehicles" (in the Japanese dub of the original Star Wars film, the Millenium Falcon is referred to as the "Millenium Falcon-go"). For this reason, although the car is called the "Mach Five" in the English version, in the Japanese version, it is called simply the "Mach", and with all due respect, I plan to make a note of that in the article. It should be noted that despite the official explanation that it was based on Ford GT40 or A Ferrari, it was certainly based on a Can-Am car the 1966 Wolverine, which debuted about a year before Speed Racer was put on TV.

1997 series changes

The only references I could find are a Japanese fansite (scroll all the way to the bottom), a list of Japanese Mach Go Go Go 1997 trading cards (No. 17 through No. 23), and this message board, but I think that's enough to confirm that those are the correct names for the buttons in the 1997 series. - 67.191.254.83 04:26, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

In fact, once I started searching Google with the Japanese characters, I found plenty of matches (ギャラント号, especially, gave a lot of relevant results), including the Japanese Wikipedia site on Mach GoGoGo, which also lists both sets of names. Features

I was expecting this article to explain the cars special features in depth but there wasn't any mention. Perhaps someone could add that. I realize that info is already on the main Speed Racer article but it is more appropriate here. Kwyjibear 17:42, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

From a strict wikipedia standpoint, I think there is some original research like statements. However, it's ok with me in view of this kind of topic is fictional anyway. Maybe we can find a few sources to add as citations as I have seen in other articles?SRMach5B 06:56, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
