initial clean-up[edit]

I've done some initial cleanup on this page to try to make it a little more coherent; the rather cryptic list of succeeding rulers is hard to follow. It's also utterly unsourced, and given its sketchy form, it really would benefit from some verification, I think. There are gaps and overlaps in various years, for example. All this is (slightly) notable, however, if, as the last two entries on the list suggest, contemporary island leadership is tied to these past rajas. Of course, if a future editor decided this was all nonsense, that'd be okay too. heh. Cdc 05:18, 12 Jan 2005 (UTC)

I have expanded the section on the history of the island, using some recent research by scholars such as Arend de Roever and Robert Barnes. I also made a clean-up of the somewhat confusing rulers list at the end, making it more coherent and removing a few irrelevant details. In this, I have made good use of the work of the anthropologist Barnes.
