Art Gallery[edit]

I think there should be a community Art Gallery inside Wikipedia for images used in Wikipedia. This project may have to become a meta-wiki project.

See: Wikipedia:Featured pictures.

File:TestJWS.jpg I am using this image (TestJWS.jpg) to test how bots treat uploaded files.

overuse of anonymity[edit]

I agree with the spirit of this essay. I am interested in exploring ways to keep the "everyone can edit" philosophy while at the same time protecting the encyclopedia from pranks and vandals. Wikipedia already has a "two-layer" system of pages; actual articles and their associated talk pages. Maybe there could be two types of Wikipedia editors, call them class A and class B editors. Class B would be the default category of editors. Under this plan, if you edit Wikipedia without first creating a user name then you would be in class B and your edits will not automatically show up on the pages of any articles that you try to edit. If you were a class B editor your attempted edits of articles would be converted into notes posted to a special section of the corresponding article talk pages, a section that would list all such edits by class B editors. The notes would say, "User:xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx made [link to a page that shows what the edit would look like|an edit]." Class B editors would be free to come to the talk page and discuss edits that they try to make to the article. The key point is that the edits by class B editors would only show up on the talk pages of articles.

Class A editors would be able to look at edits by class B editors and approve them, reject them, or flag them as vandalism. Each time that a class A editor looks at and rejects an edit by a class B editor, a short message saying "edit rejecteded by User:so-and-so would be placed under the class B edit in the list of such edits and the class A editor would be expected to provide a reason for the rejection. Edits flaged as vandalism by class A editors would trigger review of that class B editor's activity by administrators. If a class A editor approved the edit, then the edit would be made to the article and the history page would indicate both the class B editor who made the edit and the class A editor who approved the edit.

How would class A editors be created? I am in favor of a fairly strict system involving email verification. To become a class A editor, you would have to provide Wikipedia with an "official" email address. This means an email address provided to paying customers of an ISP, an email address provided to a registered student by an accredited school or any similar email account that is tracable to the person using the email account. Wikipedia would keep a list of approved ISPs, schools and other well-managed providers of tracable email addresses. Only people using such email accounts would be able to become class A editors after going through an email verification process.

Such a system would still allow all Wikipedia users to edit, but only the edits of class A editors would show up on article pages. Class A editors could still vandalize articles, but the goal would be to make it easy to block them from editing while at the same time making it not be easy for vandals to keep obtaining new email accounts that could be used to create new Class A Wikipedia user accounts. I think this system would require a minimal amount of cooperation from ISPs so that it would be a trivial matter for Wikipedia to block all email accounts provided by an ISP to any given customer. Many ISPs provide one master email account to each customer and a group of additional accounts. It should not be hard to make it so that if Wikipedia blocked one such account, then all others associated with that customer would also be blocked. This system would also make it easy for law enforcement to trace any class A editor involved in adding illegal content to Wikipedia.

{{cite journal | author = Graul R, Sadée W | title = Evolutionary relationships among G protein-coupled receptors using a clustered database approach. | journal = AAPS PharmSci | volume = 3 | issue = 2 | pages = E12 | year = 2001 | id = PMID 11741263}}

Edit to:
{{cite journal | author = Graul R, Sadée W | title = Evolutionary relationships among G protein-coupled receptors using a clustered database approach | journal = AAPS PharmSci | volume = 3 | pages = E12 | year = 2001 | id = PMID 11741263}}

and switch to Cite online journal template:

{{cite online journal | author = R. C. Graul and W. My additional modification to use the Pubmed template:

R. C. Graul and W. Sadée (2001) "Evolutionary relationships among G protein-coupled receptors using a clustered database approach" in AAPS PharmSci  Volume 3, article number E12. PMID 11741263[1]

Standard:

Example with pages, using template:

{{cite online journal | author = F. Rijsewijk, M. Schuermann, E. Wagenaar, P. Parren, D. Weigel and R. Nusse | title = The Drosophila homolog of the mouse mammary oncogene int-1 is identical to the segment polarity gene wingless | journal = Cell | volume = 50 | pages = 649-657 | year = 1987 | id = PMID 3111720}}

Homeopathy[edit]

The Wikipedia Community has placed homeopathy and pages subject to related disruption on probation (see relevant discussion).
Editors making disruptive edits may be placed on revert limitation or topic-banned by any uninvolved administrator from this and related articles, or other reasonably related pages. Editors must be individually notified of article probation before being banned. All resulting blocks and bans shall be logged at Talk:Homeopathy/Article probation#Log of blocks and bans, and may be appealed to the Administrators' noticeboard.

bans[edit]

I thought I understood bans until I saw this....which comes first, the block or the ban? I wonder if it is time to have better records of community bans? There should be a transparent path back through the process that leads to the ban.
