I'm a bit hesitant to do this, but it seems logical. I've been doing a ton of janitorial work since I first started editing Wikipedia. It's been less than three months, which I know is short; I also know that a raw edit count will show barely 1000 edits, but that number does not reflect the large number of garbage pages I've marked for speedy deletion. Lately I've been on an anti-vandalism binge, and that's where I would find admin privileges most useful; I'd probably be even more active reverting vandals; on the other hand, I'd probably actually delete fewer articles than I've marked for speedy deletion, as the non-admin approach to marking speedies always has a second pair of eyes glancing at the article to be zapped. I think I've only had one article I've marked as a speedy candidate reversed. I'm something of a natural at this, having worked as "code cop" and submissions monitor at a couple of different companies for most of the last 15 years. Now I've got a lot of free time, and it seems that the urge to keep it clean and keep it elegant needs an outlet. --jpgordon{gab} 19:59, 19 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Neutral

  1. I have been favorably impressed by Jpgordon and pretty much every turn and have no suspicions or hesitations about the qualities he has shown so far. My neutrality is based on time on project alone. Jpgordon has been in some of the high stress areas of Wikipedia already. He hasn't lost his cool there. I'm not one to track edits, but I do care about there being enough time to see how one reacts not just to the unreasonable people, but the people who are programmatically unreasonable. Everyone can surive a duck peck, but when that flock of ducks keeps pecking every day, you get annoyed by the dullness of the thing. Fully support on next nomination, barring the unforeseen.     • I appreciate this. As far as how one reacts to unreasonable (and programmatically unreasonable) people, all I can offer is that I'm experienced at it; one thing I didn't mention is that I was a community "host" on The Well for many years, on one of the most contentious conferences there, and I was quite adept at keeping down the flames without making anyone hate me. Between that and being code cop for dozens of often hot-headed and generally opinionated programmers (as well as their opinionated and hot-headed managers), I have no doubt that I will be able to maintain my cool. --jpgordon{gab} 21:45, 20 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Questions for the candidate
A few generic questions to provide guidance for voters:

1. What sysop chores, if any, would you anticipate helping with? (Please read the page about administrators and the administrators' reading list.)
A. Engaging in the noble fight against vandalism.
2. Of your articles or contributions to Wikipedia, are there any about which you are particularly pleased, and why?
A. I'm proud of the amount of vandalism I've already swept away. As far as original work, I've done a couple of photographers and a couple of musical instruments and a couple of apple cultivars, but creating new articles hasn't been my primary thrust.
3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or do you feel other users have caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and will deal with it in the future?
A. Nope, haven't had any stressful conflicts. I've got a lot of experience dealing with programmers who were resistant to my suggestions; if I can deal with them and not lose my cool, Wikipedia editors will be simple. But I don't think there's likely to be much stress; if there is, I'll step back and take a deep breath and find something else to do until I cool off.
