I can see your point. However I oppose to rename the Nassau in Bahamas because when I hear "Nassau" the Bahamas is certainly not the first or second or even third thing that enters my mind. However I would support a move to rename it to "Nassau (disambiguation)" but only with the "Nassau" leading to this disamb. and not as the capital of Bahamas. Oppose. I think it's silly to have an article called "X (disambiguation)" if plain "X" redirects there. I don't think either Nassau, Bahamas or Nassau, Germany is sufficiently dominant to allow it to be called Nassau alone. --Angr/_{tɔk tə mi} 11:18, 26 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It was requested that this article be renamed but there was no consensus for it to be moved.

This is a very old problem, when two cities with the same name are: 1) very old (like the ancient German town) and 2) very prominent (like the capital city). I think Nassau is the Bahamian capital for everybody but Germans and residents of New York (which have Nassau County) nearby. When you see "Nassau" on T-shirts, Postcards etc it is always the Bahamian capital however, so on the page this should be listed first, not way down... Of all the many places named Nassau, the original Nassau after which all the others (with the exception of a small eastern German town) are named, is the most prominent by far, having given its name to a significant historical and geographical region in today's Germany, a sovereign state (until 1866), a modern administrative district, one of Europe's most prominent royal houses, and countless other entities in Germany and around the world. Several hundred thousand people live within the geographical region and former state in modern Germany called Nassau. Of all the places named for the original German Nassau, Nassau County, New York (population: 1,3 million) is far more prominent than the small and fairly obscure city in the Carrribean (population: 200,000). The primary topic, if any, would be the larger geographical region and former independent state of Nassau, which includes and evolved from the original namesake. Placename list order[edit]

Shouldn't the most populous or most significant places named Nassau be given priority or highlighting near the top of the list? If I read an article about a place named Nassau but didn't know which one it might be referring to, and looked up "Nassau" on Wikipedia, this list is currently entirely unhelpful. It's great that all of them are named after Nassau, Germany, but it's population is not even 5000. -- Renesis (talk) 16:10, 31 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
