I edited out the "he isn't given as much credit as he deserves." I edited it to make it more neutral.

Shouldn't his original given name be Tamas or Tomasz or something consistent with Hungarian? elpincha 15:38, 8 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

may be his real name isn't hungarian because his family is american

It's Tamás. His family was Hungarian. [1] They emigrated in 1956 because of the Stalinist backlash. In this 2004 interview (in Hungarian) he says he doesn't remember much, only that they used to live in Bajcsy-Zsilinszky út in Pest. I guess his US name was always Tommy. European immigrants have always been eager to assimilate, name-wise. I don't want to imagine how people pronounced their last name, Erdélyi. --84.188.138.116 17:40, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation rhymes with "kettle-ree". Source = Tommy Ramone. Signed PCB 21 Aug 2012 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.124.11.250 (talk) 17:42, 21 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

expansion[edit]

i added a good deal of content, most if not all of which can be confirmed by the given link. if you think something needs a reference or sounds iffy, just google 'tommy ramone bio' and it'll probably come up. Joeyramoney 02:29, 4 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Editing[edit]

I'm using Please Kill Me as a reference. People with other sources with conflicting stories should add that material.

According to both Joey and Dee Dee in Please Kill Me, it was Dee Dee's idea to have Joey be the singer.

Dee Dee also says there that "Monte Melnick did us a favor by sneaking us into a rehearsal space called Performance Studios"--indicating that the space was not created specifically for the Ramones.

If we have a source for Tommy being underrated, we should put that back in. Nareek 13:50, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

guitar solos[edit]

This article says Tommy & Ed Stasium played guitar solos on several Ramones records. There is a citation to Mojo magazine. I'd recommend this info be copied over to the articles on each album----Design (talk) 12:15, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've just finished reading Commando, the biography of Johnny Ramone which asserts that Tommy was a contempary of his, not four years younger.Bashereyre (talk) 08:46, 12 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Surname trivia[edit]

I believe the surname Erdelyi is the Hungarian name for Transylvania. Transylvania means the land on the other side of the forest. Erdely means the land of seven cities. They are different names for the same place.RichardBond (talk) 10:23, 12 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

What does this have to do with improving the article? 75.177.156.78 (talk) 15:46, 12 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, that's quite interesting. But there are quite a few people with the surname Erdélyi, some of whom have wikipedia articles. In the same way there are many people with the surname London. But unless a surname is extremely rare, or unique, it's origin is not generally explained in the article for a particular person with that name. Birth year[edit]

The article states his birth year as 1952, but some sources say 1949 (or imply it through an age of death of 65). That said, some sources imply 1952. Can anyone clarify with a good source?

Also, RIP. -- Pingumeister(talk) 14:18, 12 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The source is page 18 of the 2003 book On the Road with the Ramones by Melnick, Monte A. and Meyer, Frank, MJF Books. ISBN 1-60671-020-6.
Having said that, even the BBC has the headline "Ramones punk band founder Tommy dies, aged 65". Martinevans123 (talk) 17:27, 12 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Per both The New York Times and the Ramones' official Facebook page, he was born in 1949. B.Rossow · talk 18:55, 12 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
That page of the book by Melnick and Meyer actually says 1949, too. Martinevans123 (talk) 19:10, 12 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I just checked with Andy Schwartz, author of the original report many used as a source, he confirms 1949. Wwwhatsup (talk) 19:48, 12 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
As if Facebook comments are WP:RS! lol But did you really want to out your id quite so obviously there? Martinevans123 (talk) 19:51, 12 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I knew that, but sometimes one just wants to hit a primary source. I've been outed up the wazoo, already! Wwwhatsup (talk) 19:55, 12 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Good for you! Martinevans123 (talk) 19:58, 12 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for sorting it, guys! -- Pingumeister(talk) 23:22, 12 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Age[edit]

He was 65 years old according to most sources — Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.237.34.211 (talk) 14:37, 12 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

See thread above. Martinevans123 (talk) 14:42, 12 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Proper surname[edit]

Although "Tommy Ramone" is clearly the name he is best known by (and thus the proper title for the article, per WP rules), wouldn't it be more appropriate to refer to him in the article by the name he actually used (especially after leaving the band): Tommy Erdelyi. Statements such as "Ramone and Claudia Tienan ... performed as a bluegrass-based folk duo" seem wrong, because he wasn't "Tommy Ramone" outside of the Ramones. -Jason A. Quest (talk) 12:26, 13 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This is commonly how pop stars are referred to: e.g. Georgie Fame, Madonna, Lady Gaga etc, etc. Martinevans123 (talk) 12:44, 13 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
What about after they stop using the stage name, as Erdelyi did? -Jason A. Quest (talk) 22:49, 31 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
