Welcome to Wikipedia!

If you are too timid to start a slash and burn campaign in you subject area of choice, then feel free to play around in the Wikipedia:Sandbox.

There are many things to learn here: if you want a few pointers then come and visit me at User: Noisy, or leave a message on my talk page. Otherwise, the only tips I give are

  • that you sign your name with three tildes (~~~), and leave name and timestamp with four tildes.
  • <nowiki> </nowiki> around text will stop it being interpreted.
  • Play around with your 'preferences' to change the way that your screen is displayed.
  • And finally ... I recommend that you use the 'Show preview' button as a matter of habit before saving your edits. Noisy | Talk 18:35, Dec 12, 2004 (UTC)

Copyright[edit]

Your pictures of Michael Johnson (athlete) on his page and on sprints have been temporarily removed. In order for them to be reinstated, you will need to provide the copyright information required as specified in Wikipedia:Copyrights#Image guidelines. Noisy | Talk 18:35, Dec 12, 2004 (UTC)

Comments that were on your User page[edit]

I accidentally added these comments to your user page rather than your talk page. Apologies. --Lancevortex 23:17, 12 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Hi Simyanliang. I have removed the images you added to the Michael Johnson (athlete) article, as they didn't appear to be in the public domain. If I have erred and the images are not in violation of copyright, please accept my apologies and feel free to add them to the article again. --Lancevortex 13:09, 12 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Hello again! In reply to your e-mail:
I'm not an authority on copyright issues, but to use a picture on Wikipedia you must have explicit permission from the copyright holder (often, but not always, the person who created the photo). So to answer your question, no, you can't just take a picture off a website and use it somewhere else, for educational or any other purpose. There doesn't need to be a message or a "c in a circle" symbol for the photos to be copyright; any original work is automatically copyright (at least in the USA, Europe etc.).
However, you could try contacting the copyright holder, if that information is given on the website you got the photos from, explaining to them what you want to use them for. They may be happy to give permission. If permission is indeed granted, you need to put a message to this effect on the uploaded photo (see Wikipedia:Uploading images for further info).
Hope that helps, Lancevortex 12:29, 2 Jan 2005 (UTC)
