How about a correlation between increments of wavelength in a given pixel optical depth?

The article on cross-correlation has been moved to cross-covariance. Please check the article to see if the present links are correct. PAR 9 July 2005 15:03 (UTC)

I see no reason for this article not to be integrated in the correlation function article. It will in fact introduce much needed info about applications to that article. (TimothyRias (talk) 14:17, 25 June 2008 (UTC))[reply]

I removed the merger proposal as it is a year old and hasn't led to any action. The terms as used in statistics and in astronomy are related, but the definition credited to Peebles is inconsistent with the definition as used in statistics (correlation in statistics is defined in terms of moments and cannot in general be interpreted as or converted into a probability). Therefore I don't think this serves as an application of the statistical notion of a correlation function. Skbkekas (talk) 03:54, 3 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Error in Current Article[edit]

This article has an important error. The correlation function does not give the probability of finding two galaxies separated by a distance r; rather it gives the *excess* probability over what it would be if galaxies were randomly distributed. In other words, if the correlation function is equal to zero, then galaxies are randomly distributed in space. (AAB)
