Please delete Titanic: Adventure Out of Time. It's vandalism. Thanks, Meelar 20:39, 27 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Seems to be gone already :) Dysprosia 20:43, 27 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Yeah, it should probably exist as a redirect, most of Michael's names do, sorry. Pakaran. 21:08, 27 Jan 2004 (UTC)

S'ok :) I get itchy trigger finger too sometimes... Dysprosia 21:09, 27 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Currency notation[edit]

I noticed you altered the currency notation in the article "Combustion (computers)" from "995 USD" to "$USD995." When I originally wrote that, I tried to make it conform to ISO 4217. Can you please tell me where you got your currency format?

Vespristiano 04:35, 2004 Jan 28 (UTC)

Now that you mention it, I think it's the other way around - USD $995. It's a common way of writing it that I've seen around the place, I don't think its standardized. If you wish to revert back to your standard form, that's no problem, but I'd at least stick a $-sign in there as it looks a little odd otherwise. aThanks Dysprosia 04:40, 28 Jan 2004 (UTC)
AFAIK, USD stands for "US dollars". As $ denotes dollars (in general) as well, having them both is like saying it twice saying it twice ;) I'd say USD xxx is more precise as there are more then one countries using dollars but $ xxx should be OK as well.

Recent Changes[edit]

You removed Al Murrah from recent changes, but that article remains orphaned. Please de-orphan articles before removing them. --Jiang 06:14, 28 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Ok. Thanks for the heads-up. Dysprosia 06:21, 28 Jan 2004 (UTC)

login text[edit]

hi. regarding MediaWiki:Loginprompt and MediaWiki:Loginend: the login text is OK in 800x600 but not in 640x480. People with 640px screens still need to scroll down in order to login. can you fix it? Optim 09:15, 31 Jan 2004 (UTC)

I'll give it a try. I don't feel that moving everything below the prompt is a good idea since then I feel it defeats the purpose of having some instructions there. Lemme try some stuff, I'll let you know when I'm done. Dysprosia 10:39, 31 Jan 2004 (UTC)

unfortunately my laptop just developed some technical problems and I cannot check Wikipedia in 640x480 screen at the moment :( Optim 13:18, 31 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Sandbox[edit]

M 03:47 Wikipedia:Sandbox (cur; hist) . . Dysprosia (Talk) (subst, not msg)

Oh, I was doing the opposite. I thought people were less likely to change {{msg:sandbox}} than they were to change a whole block of text. It also makes it a lot easier to check that it hasn't been vandalised. Why do you prefer subst? Angela. 03:56, Feb 1, 2004 (UTC)

Yeah, I know what you're saying. I tried {{msg:sandbox}} too but the interwiki links aren't carried over when doing it because I think msg translates things as html and not the Wiki markup, but when subst is used the wikitext is parsed directly...
Lemme try something on the Test Wiki again... (no luck)
Tx :) Dysprosia 04:06, 1 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Oh, I hadn't noticed that problem. It seems to work ok on the village pump, which uses subst and has interlanguage links. Angela. 04:10, Feb 1, 2004 (UTC)

Weird, huh... Dysprosia 04:12, 1 Feb 2004 (UTC)
Yes. :) There seem to be a lot of little strangenesses with the mediawiki namespace. Another one was the interlanguage links on the village pump causing blank lines. I'll mention it to Tim Starling. Angela. 09:59, Feb 1, 2004 (UTC)

Hi, Dysprosia! It's good to see you back again too. Hope you're well. Paige 17:03, 3 Feb 2004 (UTC)

note[edit]

Have to leave the machine for now - cannot follow up the situation with the guy who wiped out the Vandalism page. - Nilmerg 12:34, 5 Feb 2004 (UTC)

I'll keep an eye out, until I have to go. Anyway that's what Vandalism in Progress is for, for others to take a look at :) Dysprosia 12:36, 5 Feb 2004 (UTC)

My huge figures for install time are based on my experience back in January, when I went with Gentoo, I have no regrets. I don't want to scare people away, but in the next couple years it is rather unlikely to turn into Mandrake or Lindows as far as ease of use is concerned. That said, there's a supportive community (presently over 800 people on the IRC channel) which I intend to mention as well. Pakaran. 04:15, 6 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Re the install times, I was just being all generalizationy :) Anyway, I've got OpenBSD (on triple-boot!) and am happy with it, though I don't mind Linux much. Dysprosia 04:19, 6 Feb 2004 (UTC)
Hmm. My first girlfriend used openBSD for a few weeks in 2001, and she had the devil's own time getting anything to work on it. I only just now went to using Linux solely, without Windows, but don't have any real regrets. Pakaran. 04:22, 6 Feb 2004 (UTC)
OpenBSD's quite nice now (3.4 I have). I can usually make my way with stubborn installs from source by hacking the source a bit, but generally installing things from the package repository is quite straightforward. Dysprosia 04:27, 6 Feb 2004 (UTC)
Cool. Do you work in IT? I'm a senior CS major. Pakaran. 04:31, 6 Feb 2004 (UTC)
Sadly I am unemployed. I need a job, thanks for reminding me! I'm a student too, otherwise. Dysprosia 04:36, 6 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Headers[edit]

Hi Stewart. Just a tip - headers in articles start at the == level. Thanks :) Dysprosia 00:47, 8 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Hi. Err, yeah, thanks. Are you referring to a specific article? To the best of my knowledge I do start headers at the == level... :-/ Stewart Adcock 01:01, 8 Feb 2004 (UTC)
AAck you've been framed :) Sorry. I got confused with someone else. Heartfelt apologies Dysprosia 01:41, 8 Feb 2004 (UTC)
No worries. It was a good reminder anyway! Stewart Adcock 01:52, 8 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Oh dear. On my browser the == headers are bigger than the main titles. But i'll start with them anyway, since you've reminded me... Wetman 10:01, 16 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Hm, but isn't middle C C5 in MIDI, which would make that note.... erm, Bb1 or something? I think... Anyway, I changed it to something a bit more familiar (to me at least), but most readers probably won't understand that either, so it might be best to scrap it and just stick with the "three octaves below middle C" description. Anyway, ta for the explanation - MIDI never crossed my mind. --Camembert

I actually thought it was C4, but I agree with you on the notation thing, and I scrapped it already :) Dysprosia 03:45, 8 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Dysprosia: No, I wasn't offended... a little taken aback by having my edit reverted, that's all. But there's often more than one productive solution in Wikipedia, and I, for one, am glad there's someone going around correcting formatting errors, because I'm usually more focused on content. :) No hard feelings. -- Seth Ilys 06:29, 8 Feb 2004 (UTC)

anon[edit]

Apparently our wikid friend is in Germany, where I'm told on IRC that this anon is in the US. So it's hard to judge. I don't think Michael's capable of that kind of creativity - who were you thinking of? Pakaran. 05:55, 9 Feb 2004 (UTC)

No not Michael, and maybe I'm wrong: so I don't wanna name names here, really (do you have AIM or something?) Dysprosia 05:58, 9 Feb 2004 (UTC)
My (g)AIM screen name is pakaran2. Pakaran. 05:58, 9 Feb 2004 (UTC)

The idea that the new anon person might be an old friend occurred to me as well. Plus, it shouldn't matter where that IP is located, as its a proxy. --Dante Alighieri | Talk 08:08, 9 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Just if you're curious, the reason for the notation is that in ring theory, (a, b) means the ring generated by a and b, and in Z, this turns out to be the principal ideal generated by gcd(a, b). Revolver 17:19, 9 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Adding "U.S."[edit]

I guess I don't mind in theory with the information being there; what I mind is people who get it into their heads that they're going to change 30,000-plus articles to suit their own agenda. I think it should rather be done through another Rambot edit, which is how most of these articles got there in the first place. - Hephæstos|§ 04:33, 11 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Yeah, that would be the best way of going about it, but I don't know how it would be arranged. Dysprosia 04:37, 11 Feb 2004 (UTC)
The only "agenda" I and the other users (and there are several) who add "United States" to entries on US towns and cities have is to make Wikipedia as accurate as it can be. Why this offends you, I'm not sure. Moncrief 04:40, 11 Feb 2004 (UTC)
I apologize for being short earlier Moncrief, it's just a bit frustrating to see what is probably an impossible task scrolling Recent Changes night after night. This change should be made by a bot. - Hephæstos|§ 04:43, 11 Feb 2004 (UTC)
I'm not sure how to set up a bot. If you want to do so, it's a good idea. Meanwhile, I'll add the country name when I come across entries without it. If it's a waste of time, at least it's my own time being wasted. Moncrief 04:47, 11 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Tuples[edit]

What the hell is a tuple??
An ordered pair. Dysprosia 03:23, 12 Dec 2003 (UTC)

No: All ordered pairs are tuples, but many tuples are not ordered pairs; some are ordered triples, etc. Michael Hardy 21:12, 12 Feb 2004 (UTC)

New Users[edit]

Hi Dysprosia. I've seen you do a fair amount of greeting new users and helping them out (you greeted me a few months back, in fact. :-) ) I thought you might be interested in Wikipedia:Welcoming committee, which is a forum and organizing point for those who deal with new users a lot. Also, I've created an experiment at Wikipedia:New user log where I'm hoping new users will sign in and tell a little about themselves. The idea is that that will make it easier for people like you to help them find the areas of Wikipedia they're interested in and maybe introduce them to people working in those areas. Anyway, if you like that idea, you might want to update your greeting with a request that the new user sign in for us. Isomorphic 14:48, 17 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Hello Dysprosia. Ummm, I don't understand. I'm probably being thick but the examples you gave of "prose style" which I should copy were both written by me anyway. Have I misunderstood your message?

Cheers though, Wayland

It's a subtle difference - you can take a look at the difference between my edit and yours. Instead of just saying "Illustrated by ....", it sounds a little better to say something along the lines of "The novel was illustrated by ...", or, instead of "Examines the relationship between...", it may be better to say "The novel examines..."
Thanks Dysprosia 22:17, 17 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Sounds like a matter of subjective personal taste. The style you're suggesting is fine for some types of article, but not all. It's important to maintain a flexibilty toward style because we're looking at a book written by people of many different ages, nationalities and cultural backgrounds.

For instance, some articles in Wikipedia use British spelling and some use American or other varieties of English. Style and sentence construction is likewise varied. My approach with short stub articles is to create the stub with the basic information in place, then expand upon it later when I may have time. If someone else is bothered by the terseness and wants to expand it in the meantime that's fine too. After all, collaborative writing is essential to this type of creation.

Think of it, if you will, as a microcosm for world peace - learning to get along with each other's differing styles of expression. It's actually interesting and fun to see all the different approaches and styles.

All the best, Wayland

I wouldn't agree with you, since almost all of the entries in the Wikipedia are in nonfragmentary sentences, avoiding point form. However if you feel comfortable with your style, you can stick with it, if you like. Dysprosia 09:32, 19 Feb 2004 (UTC)

New Vandal[edit]

Hi, Dysprosia,

I saw you just reverted some vandalism done to the article on Sex. That situation has been going on for several hours now, an IP that won't quit. If that user has nothing better to do...

P0M 09:00, 18 Feb 2004 (UTC)

If you're talking about protection, I don't think that'd be such a great idea right now, since things have been quiet and the IP addys have been different, but if things flare up again, I'll look into it if I'm around... Dysprosia 09:04, 18 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Duplicate pages[edit]

Hi and thanks for your welcome message. How do you delete a page altogether? I found this page Program correctness that was empty; the page that has actual content about program correctness is this one: Correctness. After correcting the only link that pointed to the empty page, the empty page should now be made into a redirect to the other one... how do I do that?

Update: now I see the offending page has disappeared. Did I do that?

Only administrators can delete pages - once you're more experienced you can ask to be an administrator yourself (at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship).
If you want to create a page that points to another, called a redirect, just enter "#REDIRECT ''pagename''" as the only text on that page. I won't do it for you, give it a try at Program correctness, and I'll see how you did later :)
Don't forget to sign in future! You can do that by entering ~~~~, which will turn out like this: Dysprosia 21:25, 18 Feb 2004 (UTC)

From talk:SSM[edit]

Actually there is some dispute as to the validity of the research and/or its results. The research was conducted on post mortem transsexual women - individuals who had many years of hormone therapy. It is unclear as to whether the brain structures are a result ofthe hormone treatments or something pre-existing. - UtherSRG 12:53, 19 Feb 2004 (UTC)

But the report says: "Hormone treatment or sex hormone level variations in adulthood seemed to have no impact on BSTc neuron numbers."? Is what you are saying an independant analysis of that report? (we're getting a bit OT here though...) Dysprosia 13:02, 19 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Hrm. I know that sometime between 2000 (when the report was published) and late last year is when I'd heard/read about the report. At the same time, though, I'd heard that it was being invalidated for the reasons I'd stated above. However, I can't find a report contradicting it. - UtherSRG 13:38, 19 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Ah - I remember hearing something vague like that before, but never saw anything concrete. Anyway, it's only preliminary evidence... hopefully/perhaps there'll be more concrete investigation into the causes of TSism as time progresses! Dysprosia 13:42, 19 Feb 2004 (UTC)

"Not trying to be nosy" huh? - made me laugh - thanks for the helpful tip anyway.

It does no good to unprotect a page with an unresolved edit war. Lirath Q. Pynnor

Yes, I know, but it's been ages, and I see more harm in having the page protected. If an edit war flares up again, it can be protected again, or if you feel strongly enough, you can request it be protected again. Thanks Dysprosia 07:12, 21 Feb 2004 (UTC)

I have requested. By unprotecting the page, you make it difficult to resolve the issue. Instead of unprotecting, you should try demanding that mediation occur. Lirath Q. Pynnor

I wouldn't know if mediation is appropriate or not since I don't completely know the procedures in conflict resolution that you and 168 have gone through, I'm afraid... Dysprosia 07:45, 21 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Obviously there is an edit war, obviously mediation should be occurring. Lirath Q. Pynnor

I mean the Wikipedia:Conflict resolution steps - I'm not quite 100% familiar with these new procedures yet. Anyway, if you feel its appropriate, cant you request mediation also? I don't think it needs to be done by a third party also? Dysprosia 07:53, 21 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Yes, I have. But until mediation occurs, the page should not be unprotected. So, if you want the page to be unprotected, u should make an effort to get mediation occurring -- rather than simply unprotecting. Lirath Q. Pynnor

Hi, you voted on the issue of whether 168... should be desysoped. Following this, he was temporarily desysopped.
