  • I dunno. He's developed two computer languages, which while unpopular, at least have name reecognition in the field. Weak keep. -- Cyrius| 14:59, 7 Jul 2004 (UTC)
  • "Doesn't anybody know anything?" He's a pre-eminent computer scientist - SNOBOL was a first string processing language, one of the first dynamically-typed languages, and influential on later language designs. The world didn't begin with Perl, you know. Stan 16:43, 7 Jul 2004 (UTC)
  • Keep. Um, strong keep if you like, pardon me while I gather my thoughts and pick up my jaw from between my ankles. Back in the 70s every word this guy said was treasured. SNOBOL unpopular? I'm lost for words. I guess you mean that there are other things now that have provided better functions by running on platforms a couple of orders of magnitude faster, while building on its architecture. Well, yes, I guess that's true. Such is the fickleness of fame. Andrewa 21:10, 7 Jul 2004 (UTC)
  • Keep. Can be converted to weak keep if Robert A. Heinlein could be considered to have minor recognition. (If you haven't read Heinlein, stop editing now. There is nothing you can contribute.) - Tεxτurε 22:04, 7 Jul 2004 (UTC)
  • Keep. That's Griswold as in Griswold, Poage and Polonsky, right? (Click, click) Right. Sorry, Ambivalenthysteria, I think this is a clear keep, although it's not a great article and needs a stub notice. SNOBOL was not the first string-oriented language (COMIT definitely preceded it and I think there were others) but it was a huge contribution in many ways. SNOBOL4 was certainly the first language I used which had "programmer-defined data types." I did not encounter PASCAL's "records" and C's "structs" until several years later. I still think there was something neat about its success/fail syntax and semantics. And let me tell you, its pattern matching was considerably more powerful and easier to use than grep. • Removed from VfD. RG deserves more respect+ and isn't going to be deleted any time soon. This page should be moved to Talk:Ralph Griswold and deleted at some point. +sj++
    • I put the notice back. Removing the VfD notice before the article is off the VfD page is a rather large no-no here. DopefishJustin (・∀・) 06:23, Jul 9, 2004 (UTC)
