I noticed you just reverted the <div/> I'd put in the article Sütterlin to force a Unicode font on the paragraph using characters not in standard Windows fonts. Is there any particular reason? I've noticed this done in quite a few places before and, frankly, I find it quite helpful (as otherwise one can't read the characters there). — OwenBlacker 14:04, Aug 21, 2004 (UTC)

In fact, there's no use forcing a "Unicode font"; your user agent should fetch the right characters even if the main font (which, if your OS is not too old, is already a Unicode font) does not have it, granted that your system owns such a font. When you indicate a specific font, readers may not possess it: this does not agree with Unicode, that allows to get rid of the need of specific fonts to display correctly a multilingual text. For instance, I use Junicode as a main font and these lines in Arial Unicode MS mixed with the rest of the text look awfull.

I suggest you change you default font in your browser's preferences to another "richer" one (as Arial Unicode MS).

I understand your point, but I think it's a safe assumption that most users won't have made such a change (I can't, as I'm a Web developer; I need to have my browser preferences set mainly to how "normal" users will). Until Wikipedia moves to a Unicode font in the main CSS, setting articles to have sections in a Unicode font seems to be quite a standard occurrence (I know Welsh language has it as well, and I've definitely seen it elsewhere too).

As you'll have noticed from the CSS you reverted, I did specify a standard CSS font-family at the end of the list, so all users will have got a font they do have, even if it's just one that doesn't support the characters (like Arial).

I guess this is something we should set a policy on at some point. Though at 1am, I can't say as I care very much… ;o) — OwenBlacker 00:03, Aug 24, 2004 (UTC)

I'm not sure where you got the image fr:Image:Phrase_sanskrite.png from, but the Tamil in it is wrong. Apart from the inevitable information loss in transliteration from Devanagari, some letters are themselves wrong.

The first letter should be ஶி rather than ஷி, and the last should be ன் instead of ந். I'm hoping you have the original text and can re-convert to png and upload. Thanks. Ambarish 21:26, 15 January 2006 (UTC)

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being 'minor'. The only thing that's changed is that you will no longer have them marked as minor by default.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you are familiar with the contents of WP:MINOR, and believe that it is still beneficial to the encyclopedia to have all your edits marked as such by default, then this discussion will give you the details you need to continue with this functionality indefinitely. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.
