Applications of attribute grammars[edit]

What are the applications of attribute grammars? Only in compilers? Whether or not they are used in the study or parsing of natural languages should be stated explicitly. Some examples would also do a great deal to help readers understand what it is that the article is describing. -- Beland 03:34, 4 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

They can be only used in formal languages, as natural languages do not have formal grammars (in the same sense as, for instance, programming languages).

Well, then why D. Knuth mentions using of attribute grammars in natural languages in his article "The Genesis of Attribute Grammars" (the top of page 9)? For example, in any grammar of English an attribute telling whether the clause subject is singular 3rd person is very useful to quickly reject any parse where the (non-modal) verb does not end with "-s". What is a "Grammar"[edit]

I don't understand this article at all. What is "A grammar"? I've only heard of "grammar."

Under this topic "grammar" refers to formal grammar as defined in the theory of formal languages. Softtest123 13:24, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Knuth[edit]

Shouldn't there be some mention of D. Knuth, the inventor of Attribute Grammars? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.111.60.215 (talk) 03:06, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, better late than never, it's now done. Vincent Lextrait (talk) 17:19, 31 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
