- 1854 – Charles Frederick Crocker, son of Charles Crocker of California's Big Four railroaders, president of San Joaquin and Sierra Nevada Railroad, vice president of Southern Pacific Railroad, is born (d. 1897).[1]
- 1917 – United States President Woodrow Wilson uses the Federal Possession and Control Act to nationalize American railroads under the United States Railroad Administration during World War I.[2]
- 1976 – The second American Freedom Train (pictured) tour ends in Miami, Florida.
- 1989 – Buck Crump, president of Canadian Pacific Railway Limited, 1955-1964 and 1966, dies (b. 1904).[3]
