Welcome[edit]

Sorry, it seems that nobody has given you a formal welcome, so if you don't mind... Welcome!

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! By the way, you can sign your name on Talk and vote pages using three tildes, like this: ~~~. Four tildes (~~~~) produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome!

Removal of Rdtsc[edit]

The Rdtsc page on Wikipedia also served as the best online (and correct) guide to making use of rdtsc. Since rdtsc is an x86(*)-specific instruction, why has it been redirected to "Timestamp Counter" (a concept that is definitely not x86-specific)? More importantly, the new page does not have any of the rdtsc example code. The timestamp counter page is not only misleading but definitely not equivalent to rdtsc. I suggest you return the old rdtsc page and provide a link to the timestamp counter page. A better option would be to crop the original rdtsc page to include some information on usage. The ticks representations can be discussed on the Timestamp Counter page (under some x86 subsection).

What do you think? -- Sbahra (talkcontribs) 16:40, 21 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think:

  • that WP:NOT a guide;
  • that there's enough information about RDTSC in the Time Stamp Counter article for anyone who's interested to figure out how to use it;
  • that if you really want to keep the code, you can put it on your own site, or link to that oldid, or put it on Wikibooks;
  • that we should have as few articles about actual x86 instructions as possible (because WP:NOT a guide, and because most of them are not notable enough to have an article);
  • that if you know of any other implementations of a time stamp counter, you're welcome to add them to the article and I'll try to rework it to be less specific.

Your afd policy[edit]

Hi! You said: My policy is that if an American political party is listed here, it should probably stay. You might want to check out Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/American Patriot Party. -- Punkmorten 21:30, 7 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

...has been re-listed. See if you support my proposal to redirect to Fatherland and Freedom. Gazpacho 08:51, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

why do you delete Romanian gay porn page?

  • Because it doesn't belong on Wikipedia. It's definetly vandalism, and a borderline attack page. --Aurochs (Talk | Block)

Hello. About The Ultimate Showdown...[edit]

Don't you think the flash cartoon seems popular enough? Quite a few people seem to know about it. Oh, and sry about the misunderstanding about reposting. This was my first edit.

  • I have heard a lot about it, but I'm not quite as tuned into Internet culture as a lot of other people are. Right now, I don't think there's enough information aside from a description of the animation to constitute a proper Wikipedia article. After it's spread a little farther and had more influence on the broader Internet subculture, I'll support an article. --Aurochs (Talk | Block)

Veneti stupid comment[edit]

The comment sounded stupid, sure. But I had to disambiguate Veneti into either Adriatic Veneti or Veneti (Gaul). Obviously I guessed the later, but since it was a guess, I left a note hoping that someone would check. Thanks. Jorge Stolfi 06:28, 31 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Macro Assembler AS[edit]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Macro Assembler AS, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you agree with the deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add {{db-author}} to the top of Macro Assembler AS. Hand-coding[edit]

Hey all :).

I'm dropping you a note because you've been involved in dealing with feedback from the Article Feedback Tool. To get a better handle on the overall quality of comments now that the tool has become a more established part of the reader experience, we're undertaking a round of hand coding - basically, taking a sample of feedback and marking each piece as inappropriate, helpful, so on - and would like anyone interested in improving the tool to participate :).

You can code as many or as few pieces of feedback as you want: this page should explain how to use the system, and there is a demo here. Once you're comfortable with the task, just drop me an email at okeyes@wikimedia.org and I'll set you up with an account :).

If you'd like to chat with us about the research, or want live tutoring on the software, there will be an office hours session on Monday 17 December at 23:00 UTC in #wikimedia-office connect. Hope to see some of you there! Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 23:08, 14 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion on the AFT5 Request for Comment[edit]

Hey Aurochs - this is to notify you that there is a discussion starting on the Article Feedback RfC talkpage that has ramifications for the RfC itself. Your input is much appreciated :). Thanks! and apologies if I've missed anyone Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 16:34, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Article Feedback Tool update[edit]

Hey Aurochs. I'm contacting you because you're involved in the Article Feedback Tool in some way, either as a previous newsletter recipient or as an active user of the system. As you might have heard, a user recently anonymously disabled the feedback tool on 2,000 pages. We were unable to track or prevent this due to the lack of logging feature in AFT5. We're deeply sorry for this, as we know that quite a few users found the software very useful, and were using it on their articles.

We've now re-released the software, with the addition of a logging feature and restrictions on the ability to disable. Obviously, we're not going to automatically re-enable it on each article—we don't want to create a situation where it was enabled by users who have now moved on, and feedback would sit there unattended—but if you're interested in enabling it for your articles, it's pretty simple to do. Just go to the article you want to enable it on, click the "request feedback" link in the toolbox in the sidebar, and AFT5 will be enabled for that article.

Again, we're very sorry about this issue; hopefully it'll be smooth sailing after this :). If you have any questions, just drop them at the talkpage. Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) 21:48, 1 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
